The duo Veranda first met at Barfly, a unique place often called the “headquarters of Bluegrass in Montreal.” Over the course of those evenings in 2018, Veranda was born out of a shared passion for bluegrass and old country music. Catherine-Audrey Lachapelle and Léandre Joly-Pelletier, the founding members, come from different backgrounds, which contributes greatly to the richness of their work.

Catherine-Audrey, first an actress, brings freshness and sensitivity to their music. Léandre, a talented multi-instrumentalist, infuses the songs with his virtuosity. Veranda blends influences beautifully, pairing the simplicity of old country with the technical brilliance of bluegrass, and offering rich melodies enhanced by refined harmonic work.

The unique band Veranda quickly made its mark in the country/bluegrass scene. Their first English-language EP, Woodland Waltz (2019), was ranked among the best mid-year albums by ICI Musique, which also described their work as “(…) inspired by artists like Loretta Lynn or a young Dolly Parton. The duo makes no compromises and draws directly from the roots of country sound, (…) which is nothing to complain about.”

Hungry for creation, Veranda soon released a second EP, this time in French. Their mini-album Yodel bleu (May 2020) won Best Country Album at the 2020 GAMIQ Awards and earned them a nomination at the 2020 Gala Country for “Discovery of the Year.” The duo quickly piqued the curiosity of audiences and seasoned bluegrass fans alike.

Their music crossed the border to the U.S., birthplace of bluegrass. The two most important American bluegrass media outlets, Bluegrass Today and Bluegrass Situation, both praised the Quebec duo, highlighting the quality and uniqueness of their work, noting that traditional bluegrass in French is rare if not unheard of. It became clear that Veranda was here to stay. Unsurprisingly, SOCAN listed them among the five Quebec country newcomers to watch in 2022.

With more than 250 concerts across Quebec, the Maritimes, Western Canada, and France, the band has strong momentum. Their latest album Là-bas (2022) received five nominations (ADISQ, Canadian Folk Music Awards, two Gala Country nominations, and GAMIQ). Guided by their shared passion and growing success, the couple continues to refine and evolve their style, expanding their audience. The band will release its second LP in winter 2026.

Le duo Veranda s’est rencontré pour la première fois au Barfly, un lieu unique souvent surnommé le « quartier général du bluegrass à Montréal ». C’est au fil de ces soirées, en 2018, que Veranda est né d’une passion commune pour le bluegrass et le country traditionnel. Les deux plus importants médias américains du genre, Bluegrass Today et Bluegrass Situation, saluent le duo québécois, soulignant la qualité et l’originalité de leur démarche, et notant que le bluegrass traditionnel en français est rare, voire inédit. Il devient alors évident que Veranda est là pour rester. Sans surprise, SOCAN les classe parmi les cinq nouvelles révélations country du Québec à surveiller en 2022.
